Are you having trouble swallowing your tablets?

When it comes to swallowing tablets or capsules, it is understandably strange to swallow a solid substance without chewing it first, as this goes against our natural reflexes as human beings. It’s even trickier to swallow tablets that are very large or those that have a bad taste. Nonetheless, when it comes to medication, tablets and capsules are extremely convenient, frequently prescribed by doctors and considered to be very much the ‘norm’ in our modern world.

There are many techniques that you may be using to assist in swallowing your medication. Some of the more common ones include opening capsules or crushing tablets to create a powder. Did you know that by doing this you could actually be affecting the way the drug behaves in your body and in some instances be making the tablets taste far worse than they do when whole?

If you hate swallowing tablets or capsules and battle every time you take your vitamins or medication, speak to your pharmacist or doctor to find out if your medication is available in another form (perhaps a liquid, a powder or a patch). If not, then they may suggest that you use MEDCOAT™.

How can MEDCOAT™ help?

MEDCOAT™ is used to provide tablets with a coating which makes them easier to swallow and improves their taste.

The coating makes tablets slippery and contains saliva stimulating ingredients. Together this makes tablets easier to swallow.

The coating also masks the taste of tablets and gives them a refreshing taste of citrus.

The coating dissolves quickly once the tablets are swallowed.

Is MEDCOAT™ suitable for all tablets and capsules?

MEDCOAT™ can be used by children and adults and is recommended for use in the following instances:

• When taking large tablets that are sometimes difficult to swallow (e.g. antibiotics)
• When taking tablets that are known to have a bad taste (e.g. corticosteroids, malaria medication, etc.)
• When taking tablets that need to be divided or broken, as these may have sharp edges
• When teaching children how to swallow tablets
• When taking many tablets each day (for both chronic or acute conditions)
• When elderly patients find it difficult to swallow their tablets

MEDCOAT™ is not suitable for use with the following types of tablets:

• Chewable tablets
• Tablets that melt or dissolve in the mouth
• Dispersible or effervescent tablets
• Tablets that must be taken alone, with plain water only

How do you use MEDCOAT™?

The package (pouch) contains a card with 10 applicators. Each applicator can be used to coat two small tablets or one big tablet. 

If you are taking only one tablet per day you will need to use a new MEDCOAT™ applicator each time. It’s also important to keep the foil envelope sealed at all times.
